ABOUT ÆTHOS™

Technology that makes room for you.

Æthos™ began with a question: how can AI support the way we think while leaving room for our own judgment?

We’re building experiences around reflection, handwriting, listening, and conversation, starting with a.Journey™ and working toward a screenless interface for human-first AI.

Help human creativity thrive in the age of AI.

Our mission is to help people explore possibilities and choose their own direction.

We’re interested in the moments before a decision: when an idea is still forming, an assumption needs questioning, or an unexpected change asks us to think differently.

Our approach is to offer thoughtful support while keeping the person’s attention, interpretation, and choices at the center.

The work changed. So did the people doing it.

While leading teams at Tesla, Karen Marie Bacolod noticed that business challenges often came with personal transitions. People were stepping into responsibility, rebuilding confidence, and adapting when familiar approaches stopped working.

That experience shaped her interest in the questions people ask themselves during change, and how a different perspective can open another way forward.

Æthos™ grew from a desire to bring that exploration into everyday life.

We’re beginning with a.Journey™.

a.Journey™ is a 21-day guided reflection practice for people navigating change, exploring an idea, or deciding what comes next.

Guided questions invite you to write, try small practices, and return to what you notice. Narrative and the Hero’s Journey provide a way to explore your next chapter while leaving its meaning to you.

We’re inviting early participants to help us understand which parts of the experience are useful in everyday life.

Two backgrounds. One shared question.

Karen and Dakota first worked together at Tesla. Today, they bring experience in leadership and engineering to a shared question: how can technology support people’s thinking while keeping them in control?

Karen Marie Bacolod

FOUNDER, CEO

Karen is an entrepreneur, speaker, and former Tesla leader. During a decade at Tesla, she held nine leadership roles, led operations across 16 locations, and helped turn around more than 13 underperforming teams.

Her experience supporting people through uncertainty informs Æthos™ and its focus on reflection, storytelling, and the questions that help people approach change.

Dakota Heredia

CO-FOUNDER, CTO

Dakota is an engineer and cofounder of Æthos™, with experience across software, hardware, and AI. A former robotics engineer at Shield AI, he previously worked alongside Karen at Tesla.

He brings that technical background to the development of a.Journey™ and the exploration of screenless interfaces that fit more naturally into everyday life.

Research informs what we explore.

We draw on research in handwriting, reflection, and human interaction to shape our design questions. Participant feedback helps us understand how those ideas translate into everyday use.

These studies inform our approach; they do not establish outcomes for Æthos™ products.

A study of 36 adults found differences in brain connectivity while participants wrote words with a digital pen and typed them. It did not directly measure learning outcomes. For us, it raises a design question: how can digital support preserve the experience of thinking on a page?

A small study of 10 pairs observed coordination in brain activity during face-to-face dialogue, associated with interaction and turn-taking. It informs our interest in making room for human conversation. Listening to AI is a different experience.

Research examining students' use of ChatGPT raises questions about how AI affects reflection and engagement in learning. Our design question is practical: how can an experience invite you to consider alternatives and form your own judgment?

What human-first means to us.

Your thinking comes first.

Make space to form a thought before receiving a suggestion.

Possibilities remain open.

Offer questions and perspectives people can explore, adapt, or dismiss.

Your attention matters.

Design interactions that allow attention to return to writing, conversation, and everyday life.

You decide what it means.

Keep interpretation and direction with the person using the experience.

More room to think. Beyond the screen.

Our longer-term vision is a screenless interface for human-first AI.

We’re exploring how familiar objects and gentle interactions could support writing, listening, and reflection in everyday life.

a.Pen™ · a.Hat™ · a.Vision™

These future concepts are under exploration. We’ll share more as they develop. What we learn through a.Journey™ will help shape that direction.

Help shape what comes next.
